First of its kind legal aid centre opened in Patna

PATNA: In a first of its kind in the state, a Lions Legal Aid Centre, marked in the name of the Late Justice Prem Shankar Sahay, was launched at the Bihar Sate Bar Council Bhawan here on Tuesday by the Lions Club of Patna.

Inaugurating the Lions Legal Aid Centre, Justice Samarendra Pratap Singh of the Patna high court said that with the launch of this centre by a private body, a new era has begun in Bihar.

He assured that the Legal Aid Committee of the high court would also give expert advice and support to the Lions Legal Aid Centre opened in the name of the Late Justice Prem Shankar Sahay, who was one of the founder members of the Lions Club of Patna.

He hoped that a Legal Aid Centre of the Lions Club would also be opened for the needy and the poor. He recounted immense contribution of Justice Sahay to the society by being involved in the activities of several social organisations and Mahavir Mandir Nyas trust, which runs hospitals and a cancer hospital.

Presiding the meeting, a Patna high court lawyer, Alok Kumar Sinha, said that the Lions Legal Aid Centre would have 15 lawyers as its members to provide legal aid to poor litigants.

Former district governor of the Lions Club International Distt. 322E, S P Srivastava, said that this centre would provide legal aid to poor prisoners languishing in jails and unable to contest their cases for want of money.

Other speakers included the president of the Advocates’ Association, Yogesh Chandra Verma, present district governor of the Lions Club, R P Singh, the secretary of the club, R C Dhar, and R S Gandhi.
