Bihar lifts record quantity of grains from FCI godowns

PATNA: Bihar government in 2010-2011 lifted record quantity of foodgrains from the FCI godowns. The state had also made record procurement of wheat in 2008 and 2009.

Principal secretary, department of food and consumer protection, Tripurari Sharan said on Thursday the lifting of foodgrains under BPL and Antyodaya scheme had never gone beyond 35-37% of the allocation in the state in the past.
He said not only did the government lift record quantity of foodgrains but in some months it was more than 144-173% of the allocation.

Sharan also said that the state government had in 2008 and 2009 procured a record five lakh tonnes of wheat.
Sharan said the government’s prime concern is to ensure foodgrains to BPL families through PDS, making procurement of foodgrains from farmers at the minimum support price and checking the prices of essential commodities.

He also said though the Union government under Food Protection Act provides foddgrains for only 65 lakh BPL families, the actual number of BPL families in the state stood at 1.35 crore.
