Bihar will have its own state Anthem

The people of Bihar will soon have an anthem they could call their own. The state’s remarkable turnaround in the past five years has spurred the Nitish Kumar government to propose that such a song be composed.

The state’s human resource department has placed an open advertisement inviting entries for Bihar Geet. Anyone from the country or elsewhere can send in entries and the winner will receive a cash award of Rs 1 lakh.

Although the department has set no age bar for those sending in entries, it has restricted the number of entries per head to one and set the duration of the song at two minutes.

Anjani Kumar Singh, principal secretary of the department, said: “The lyrics of the state song should give a feel of the quintessential flavour of the Bihari soil.” Singh said the government has also invited entries for a special prayer to be sung at morning assemblies in schools across the state. The focus for this composition is on inspirational and motivating verse and on positive thoughts. Also, the prayer should be only three minutes long.

The state song and the prayer, Singh said, should be set in simple and lyrical language. The department has set the last date for submission of entries as February 4 and will constitute a panel of experts to select the best entries in both categories.

The government move follows chief minister Nitish Kumar’s suggestion at the Bihar Diwas celebrations last year that the state should have a song to reflect its pride as well as that of its people.

The chief minister had said there was a need for an inspirational state anthem that could be sung at all functions.

Since taking over as the state’s chief minister, Nitish has become a vocal supporter of boosting the Bihari pride.
