Milk prices would not be allowed to be increased in Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar said.
“Bihar has more than enough milk. Milk prices would thus not be increased here,” Kumar said today.
Bihar State Co-operative Milk Producers Federation Ltd (COMPFED) officials had gone on record saying that the six Bihar milk cooperatives had agreed on increasing sachet prices by Rs2 a litre across all varieties of packaged milk marketed under Sudha brand.
The COMFED general managers had a meeting with chief minister and state animal resources minister Giriraj Singh and the apex milk producing body decided to shelve for a while increase in the rates of packaged milk.
The minister said that Sudha milk prices would stay as they were, at least for the time being. “I am scheduled to again meet the COMPFED officials on January 7 for a fresh round of discussion,” he said.
Sudha dairy had raised prices of its packaged milk by Rs2 a litre exactly a year ago.
COMPFED’s daily milk procurement in Bihar crossed the seven lakh litre mark a few months ago and is estimated to top the nine lakh litre daily mark soon.
