PATNA: A quick visit to the chambers of bureaucrats and police officers in the secretariat and state police headquarters here would give you an impression that all of them have put their head down to fill the forms pertaining to possession of moveable and immoveable assets. They are busy because the deadline is February 28.
In the backdrop of the state government’s clear intention to make an onslaught against corruption, the general administration department has issued a notification directing all the state government and Central services officials of Bihar cadre to fill the proforma by the stipulated date. It is assumed that once the government has details of assets of officers, it would be easier for it to keep tab on the corrupt elements.
Some officers rue their fate for being allotted Bihar cadre as disclosing assets has become mandatory for all, while others have taken it sportingly. However, some officers are of the opinion that the government was making futile exercise as these things would not lead it to the real culprit.
A senior police officer told TOI that such a move would not help the government to get to the bottom of the corruption unless the government also frames rule in such a way that it could also ask bureaucrats and police officers, who have resigned from the service say during the last one or two years, to submit their asset details. Besides, not only officers, the constables and bodyguards who remained attached with different officers and politicians for the last say 15 years at a stretch, should also be brought under this ambit as they instead of doing their assigned task, allegedly become party to illegal activities of officials and politicians.
