Indira Gandhi International Airport at NEw Delhi has been adjudged the world’s most improved airport as well as the number one airport in India by SKYTRAX-World Airport Awards.
Indira Gandhi International Airport is the busiest Airport of India.With the commencement of operations at the new Terminal 3, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has become India’s and South Asia’s largest and one of the most important aviation hub, with a current capacity of handling more than 46 million passengers and aimed at handling more than 100 million passengers by 2030
The Indira Gandhi International Airport took the top honours in ‘Most Improved’ category for this year leaving Ankara Esenboga airport at second spot, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport at third, Sydney Airport at fourth and Recife International Airport at fifth place at the recently concluded ‘SKYTRAX – World Airport Awards’ in Vienna.
“In the ‘India’s Best Airport’ category, Delhi airport topped the chart after relegating Bangalore International Airport to second spot. Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, also run by GMR Group, came at the third spot,” a DIAL spokesperson said.
Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai was adjudged fourth, while Chennai International Airport secured the fifth place for airports in the sub-continent.
“These awards speak volumes of our high service standards at IGIA. We are immensely proud of receiving these awards from SKYTRAX. Both these awards are a tribute to all those who have been a part of modernisation and operationalisation of Delhi airport,” CEO of DIAL, I Prabhakara Rao said after receiving the award.
The World Airport Awards are prestigious recognition for airports across the world, based on the annual SKYTRAX airport passenger satisfaction survey conducted at more than 388 airports world-wide.
“The awards are global benchmark of airport excellence and quality ranking. 100 different nationalities of passengers evaluates their experiences across 39 different airport service and product factors – from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration through to departure at the gate during the nine month survey period in 2011-12,” the spokesperson said.
“Coinciding with the opening of the new Terminal 3, there has been a significant improvement in product standards for passengers travelling into Delhi International Airport. The enhanced air-side transit service, and better shopping and dining options has really improved the passenger experience and Delhi airport now provides a most competitive international standard,” Chairman of SKYTRAX, Edward Plaisted said.
The airport serves as the primary civilian aviation hub for the National Capital Region of India. It was previously operated by the Indian Air Force until its management was transferred to the Airport Authority of India. In May 2006, the management of the airport was passed over to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a joint venture led by the GMR Group, which also has the responsibility for the airport’s ongoing expansion and modernization.
