National Institute of Technology, Patna shall soon get the status of a Deemed University under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956. Presently it is an autonomous institute under the NIT Act 2007.
Prof. R Natarajan, Former Chairman of AICTE informed this during the 3rd Convocation of NIT Patna at S. K. Memorial Hall yesterday. Â The Chief Guest at the Convocation was Former President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam.
NIT Patna was formed in 2004, after rechristening the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering Patna. It has its history dating back to 1886, making it India’s 6th oldest Engineering College.
The Institute offers degrees in B. Tech, M. Tech and M.Sc in various disciplines and is one of the leading technical insitute of Bihar. It has already been declared an Institute of National Importance.
The Institute now fulfills most of the requirements of Deemed University, which according to  UGC are filling up of all vacant posts of teachers, repair of college buildings, introduction of new branches of engineering, its accreditation from the board of accreditation and its regular interaction with industries.
The institute is situated on the south bank of  river Ganges behind Gandhi Ghat. The campus has a picturesque river view with historic building presenting a spectacle of architectural delight and natural beauty.
A new 100 Acre Campus of NIT Patna is expected to come up at Amhara Village in Bihta, around 40 km from Patna.
