Kannada scholar and former VC of Hampi University MM Kalburgi shot dead

Bengaluru/ Dharwad, Aug 30 (ANI): Senior Kannada writer and former vice-chancellor of the Hampi University, professor MM Kalburgi was shot dead at his residence in Dharwad district of Karnataka by an unidentified gunman on Sunday.

Professor Kalburgi had his run-ins with right wing Hindutva groups over the years. The identity of the assailants and the motives behind the murder are unknown at this point.

Meanwhile, Union Law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda condemned the murder and paid condolences to the grieved family members. Karnataka Law Minister TB Jayachandra also expressed grief on the loss.

Journalists and members of civil society spilled on the streets of Bengaluru city of Karnataka in protest over his murder. Karnataka State minister for food and civil supplies, Dinesh Gundu Rao recounted how Narendra Dhabolkar, an Indian rationalist, was shot down in a similar case allegedly for crusading against blind faith.
