Bengaluru, Nov 11 (ANI): Workers of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday staged a protest against Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary, which is being celebrated by the Karnataka Government. The protestors held placards and raised slogans against the event. Yesterday, violent clashes had broken out in Madikeri town of Karnataka over the 265th anniversary celebrations revolving around Tipu Sultan, an 18th century ruler who is a much-debated figure in history. Known as the Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 to 1799 and was considered an implacable enemy of the British. He was killed in battle in May 1799, while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against the British Army. Critics describe Tipu as a tyrant who forcefully converted Hindus and persecuted Christians.
