Centre urged to protect engineers working in Nepal

PATNA: The state government has taken serious note of the attack on engineers of the water resources department by miscreants from Nepal and asked the Centre to take up the matter with the Nepal government to stave off such ugly incidents in future.

The engineers were attacked last Monday while they were engaged in strengthening of Kosi eastern afflux bund in the Nepal portion of the Kosi project.

In a letter to secretary, ministry of water resources, government of India, U N Panjiyar, state water resources department principal secretary Ajay Nayak detailed the sequence of events on the fateful day. Nayak said two motorcycle-borne criminals in an inebriated state attacked the engineers. One of them was in a serious condition. The situation was brought to normal due to timely arrival of the Nepalese patrolling party. While one of the miscreants, the other managed to escape.

Nayak said the engineers have already lodged an FIR with the Bhantawari police station, Nepal, in this regard.

He further mentioned in the letter that since monsoon has already arrived, round-the-clock vigilance of the Kosi embankments and other project facilities were of paramount importance. “In view of the above, it is requested that the matter may kindly be taken up with appropriate authority in the Nepal government so as to ensure law and order which is important to maintain and protect Kosi embankment,” the lettter said.

Copy of the letter has also been sent to the director, ministry of external affairs, counsellor (commerce), Indian embassy in Kathmandu, and district magistrate, Supaul.
