PATNA: The sleepy town of Sonepur awoke to a pleasant sight on Friday morning when a specially crafted, 16-coach, fully air-conditioned “Science Express” train chugged in at a platform of Sonepur railway station, once famous for its longest platform in Asia.
The “Science Express” Exhibition train, the flagship venture of the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) and Department of Science and Technology, has been designed to educate people at large and students in particular about developments in the field of science and how these developments are going to affect future life.
The majority of the exhibits have been designed and developed by Max Planck Society of Germany. The aim of exhibits is to nurture curiosity amongst youth and encourage them to pursue higher studies and career in science.
The “Science Express” at Sonepur was opened to public on Friday by Angaraj Mohan, additional divisional railway manager (Â ADRM), Sonepur. A large number of students from different schools of Sonepur and Hajipur turned up on the first day to view the exhibits.
The students showed great interest in going through the exhibits. During its three-day stay, the “Science Express” is expected to draw students not only from schools of Sonepur and Hajipur but also Patna.
Angaraj Mohan told TOI that the “Science Express” train showcases more than 300 large format visual images, over 150 video clips and multimedia exhibits, which deal extensively with cutting-edge research in science and technology. Some indigenous exhibits have been displayed which highlight India’s glorious legacy and achievements in information technology, biotechnology, space, nanotechnology, and future programmes in science and technology. Besides, brief sketches of great Indian scientists like Sushrut, JC Bose, Homi Bhabha and others whose contribution is unparalleled, have been displayed.
Mohan further said this is phase IV of the journey of the “Science Express”. It started on December 04, 2010 from Gandhinagar and will complete its journey on June 16, 2011 covering 55 stations and staying at each for 3 to 4 days. The first phase of the “Science Express” was flagged off from New Delhi on October 30, 2007 by the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of Germany. Since then it has been showcased in about 160 cities across the country.
