Bihar Government has approved the proposal of linking E-Shakti Cards with UID (Universal Identification Number). Under this proposal UID would only provide the number (identity) while the Demographic profiles, iris and fingerprints would be provided by E-shakti.
E-Shakti is an initiative of Bihar Government in which the MNREGA workers are provided with a bio-metric card containing all their personal details.It has proved to be helpful in recording details of attendance and payments under MNREGA. Bihar has distributed 12 lakh e-Shakti card to the poor people in Patna alone.
In the first phase, 2.50 crore people would be provide these identity cards at an estimated cost of Rs 674.80 crore in the next five years. A pilot project of integrated UID and E-shakti projects has been already launched in Patna district.Presently, 2.74 lakh persons have been enrolled for UID in Bihar and but the card has been issued to 1.10 lakh people only
