Chandigarh will host the Davis Cup Tie 2012 between India and New Zealand in September  this year. This is second time, India would be hosting Davis Cup Tie.  India had last hosted a Davis Cup tie in 1994.
A tie is used in the Davis Cup to mean an elimination (or knockout) round. In the annual World Group competition, 16 nations compete in 8 first-round ties (“rounds”); the 8 winners compete in 4 quarter-final-round ties; the 4 winners compete in 2 semifinal-round ties; and the 2 winners compete in the final round tie.
The India-New Zealand Davis Cup tie will be played in Chandigarh in September, a senior tennis official said here Tuesday. The tie will be played at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) courts in  Sector 10 here.
CLTA chairman Rajan Kashyap, quoting the All-India Tennis Association (AITA) secretary general Anil Khanna, announced that the Davis Cup tie would be played here. It was played between India and Australia.
The announcement was made  on Tuesday when leading tennis player Leander Paes played an exhibition match at the CLTA court.
“The popularity of tennis is increasing in the country. We need to have more professional tennis academies,” Paes told reporters.
He said that he was preparing for the London Olympics as “winning an Olympic medal in doubles was one thing close to the heart”.
