Should every state government follow the example of Rajasthan and open generic medicine stores throughout their state so that all citizens get medicines at the lowest possible price? A major part of health care is the pharmaceutical profession. And the cost of branded medicines can be astronomical, as can the difference between these and generic medicines. Dr Samit Sharma talks about the reason for pharmaceuticals’ pricing, while in reality they are quite able to sell generic drugs more widely.  Dr Samit Sharma says the exorbitant costs of medicines put even basic drugs out of reach for poor people — and this is not even necessary because the real cost of the medicines is much less.

Just as there are people who are part of the problem, there are people who are part of the solution. Dr Devi Shetty outlines the medical insurance scheme which helps even the poorest person to get the best medical treatment. The tests that doctors prescribe are sometimes not required at all, and often the doctors know that there is nothing wrong with the patient, so they ask for a ‘basin test’ in which the blood is collected and simply thrown in the basin, and the result is stated to be normal.

The system of commissions and payoffs is rampant, and sickening. And unscrupulous doctors are to be found everywhere, even operating among the poorest sections. Pharmaceutical representatives give doctors ‘incentives’ to
prescribe medications from their firms, explains Dr Gulhati.
