Northern Command of Indian army celebrated its 41st Birthday on Sunday. Â The anniversary celebrations were marked by recalling the tough times in the state that has borders with China and Pakistan.
The command was raised in 1972, soon after the 1971 Indo-Pak war. It has its headquarters in Udhampur, 66 km north of Jammu.
A spokesman of the Northern Command said: “Over the years, we have carved out an enviable niche for ourselves as a highly efficient and effective command. This formidable reputation has been earned by the unparalleled valour and consummate dedication of its rank and file. The Northern Command (popularly known as Dhruva Command), has the unique responsibility of guarding the nation’s borders with both Pakistan and China,in addition to effectively countering proxy war,” the spokesman said.
Lauding the accomplishments of the command, the spokesman said, “It has lived up to the faith reposed on it by the nation, be it combating terrorism or the Kargil intrusion in 1999 and in doing this, many officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks of the Northern Command have made the supreme sacrifice of their lives. The soldiers of the command are deployed in extremely inhospitable and hazardous environs which includes Siachen. Troops of the command continue to serve with utmost zeal and enthusiasm, drawing inspiration from the saga of bravery and sacrifice of their predecessors.”
