In what can be called a Sensational news, India Star duo, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi have won the  French Open Mixed Doubles 2012 Title defeating Polish-Mexcian combine of Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Santiago Gonzalez at   Roland Garros  today.
The Indian pair although started gingerly, conceding an early break, they came back strongly as the set progressed, breaking their counterparts in the sixth game and taking the set to the tiebreaker, which they won 7-3.
This is the 3rd Victory for  the duo Mahesh -Sania . Earlier, they had  won the 2009 Australia Open and had ended as runners-up at the same tournament in 2008.
Playing their third Grand Slam final together, the seventh seeded Indian pair scored a 7-6 (3) 6-1 win over the Polish-Mexican pair in one hour and 13 minutes at the Court Philippe Chatrier.
It is second career Grand Slam title for Sania while 12th Major trophy for Bhupathi, who now has won eight mixed doubles trophies.
Bhupathi, who turned 38 Thursday, has now won all four Grand Slams twice in the category with first one coming here in 1997 when he partnered Rika Hiraki of Japan.
“A Grand Slam title has come after a long time. The first one since I have become a father. It will always be special,” said Bhupathi referring to his first Grand Slam win since Melbourne in 2009.
It was not the best of starts for the Indians as they looked jittery. Bhupathi struggled with his serve in the semifinal and this time it was Sania who took time to get into the groove. She lost her first service game on love to make it 1-3.
Sania-Bhupathi got back into the match by breaking Klaudia’s serve with Bhupathi unleashing a cracking forehand down the line, levelling the set at 4-4.
It was anybody’s set going into the tie-break. The seasoned Indian combination rose to the occasion, taking 6-3 lead and converting their first set point. Bhupathi made the difference in the tie-break, coming up with lethal returns at the right time.
They raced to a 5-1 lead in the second as Klaudia and Gonzalez could not maintain their level of play. The Indians put up a disciplined effort in the 26-min set and did not make a single unforced error double fault.
Mahesh Bhupathi was the first Indian to win a Grand Slam tournament when he took the French Open Mixed Doubles title in 1997. He was 23 years old. Now, at 38, he has 11 Grand Slam trophies on his shelf. With his victory of the Australian Open Mixed Doubles in 2006, he joined the elite group of eight tennis players who have achieved a Career Mixed Doubles Grand Slam.
