The Politics behind the making of 13th President of India

While most of the Gen Y and the Intellectuals want Dr. APJ ABdul Kalam to be the next President of India, it is shameful that Political parties are busy encashing Political gains for their support to candidates. Inspite of the fact that no candidate enjoys a stature equal to Dr. Kalam, no party except Mamta Bannerjee has come out in open support to Dr. Kalam.  Mulayam Singh Yadav is now  being symbolised for U-Turn  after he abandoned his support to Dr. Kalam in favou r of Pranab Mukherjee. Internet is flooded with U-Turn jokes of SP Chief.

Below we present a roundabout of Candidates for Presidential Polls.

Although, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is yet to make up its mind on supporting Mukherjee, murmurs of support for him came from its key alliance Janata Dal-United (JDU) and to some extent Shrimoni Akali Dal (SAD)

In Patna, JDU leader Shivanand Tiwari said a “graceful sendoff” should be given to the veteran politician by making him the country’s 13th president.

A senior and respected leader like Pranab Mukherjee, who is going to retire (from active politics), should be given a graceful sendoff,” Tiwari told reporters in Patna, adding that it was his personal view.

Trinamool Chief Mamta Bannerjee has not lost hope for Dr. Kalam being the President. After losing the support of Samajwadi Party she has started Campaign on Facebook for making Dr. Kalam as President.

She wrote, “I gave voice to what millions of Indians want to see in a President.”

Refusing to budge from her stand, she said: “My party is a small party. We are not a big party with none of the resources others possess. We are led by truth and conviction.

P Sangma

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Saturday said that it “unconditionally” supported Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for the post of president, and not only cautioned but also hinted action against senior party leader P.A. Sangma for contesting the presidential poll.

P A SangmaLet me make it very clear that Mr. Sangma does not enjoy support of the NCP. We wish that he does not contest. If he does, I cannot say anything now, he is a senior leader, but I don’t think he should defy the party’s direction or the line of thinking,” NCP leader Praful Patel told a news channel.

“The party’s direction and the line is to support Pranab Mukherjee unconditionally,” he added.

Sangma enjoys the support of two chief ministers – AIADMK’s J.Jayalalitha and Biju Janata Dal’s Naveen Patnaik. The BJD came out in open support of Sangma Saturday. NCP is part of UPA and had endorsed Mukherjee’s candidature Friday.

“As of now there is no change in our decision on the presidential poll. BJD sticks to its support for Sangma, a prominent tribal leader. We are determined to back Sangma,” senior leader and BJD parliamentary party leader Arjun Sethi told reporters in Odisha.

Hamid Ansari

His name has not appeared in the support list of any party so far.

The BJP had earlier favoured A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. But in all probability, the former president will not contest, despite Mamata Banerjee insisting that her Trinamool Congress will support him.

BJD (3.3 percent) and AIADMK (2.8 percent) together make only 6.1 percent of total votes in the electoral college. If NDA backs Sangma, the total will be 33. 8 percent.

Even if Sangma decides to contest the presidential poll, Mukherjee is set to sail through with a total vote share of 48 percent on his side.
