A  hoarding in Guwahati put up by the government this morning shows the faces of some of those identified, including the main accused Kalita. The text on it reads: “These people have shamed the Assamese society. Please identify them. Your dear ones could also be victims of these predators. Please identify them and inform the nearest police station.”

For the First Time, Union Government has intervened in the matter. Home Minister P Chidambaram said, “Molestation of women anywhere in India is condemnable. Will find out from Assam CM what action the state government has been taken.”

“We are demanding that the men involved in the incident be given exemplary punishment and that the State government also punish the policemen for their late response. The fact that it has taken the State government nearly a week to act on the case is a matter of shame,’’ said National Council of Women chairperson Mamta Sharma.

According to some other Sources, it was initially an Internal Fight which turned into a Violent Molestation. Three girls including the victim went to a bar with two boys; they got into a fight. When they left the pub, their fight turned violent. People gathered at a nearby rickshaw stand tried first to separate the victim and the boy she was fighting with but soon, the girl began to be molested. The police took 30 minutes to arrive there. Nobody tried to intervene to help the victim.
