Former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of flight attendant Geetika Sharma, was let off by police in a 2008 case of assault on income tax officials, an official said.
Kanda was the main accused in the assault on income tax officials during a raid at his MDLR Airlines office, but he along with his relative, an additional chief judicial magistrate in Rajasthan’s Barmer district, was let off in April 2012, a police official said Saturday.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Civil Lines police station in Feb 2008 here, Kanda, his relatives Govind Aggarwal and Motilal and 50 others were booked under sections 332, 353, 148, 149, 506 of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Arms Act.
The FIR was filed on the complaint of the then Deputy Director of Income Tax (Unit One), Aashutosh Verma.
Kanda and his associates had assaulted the income tax raiding team with weapons and snatched away files and floppies that were taken into custody from the MDLR office, according to the complainant.
However, after a probe, the police report which was submitted to the court gave Kanda and his relatives a clean chit.
The next hearing in the case would be held Sep 10.
A property dealer-turned-politician, Kanda was elected as an independent legislator from Sirsa in the 2009 Haryana assembly polls and joined the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government as minister of state for home.
I suppose that like all other politicians who go to jail, kanda will also be out in no time. Is there any example of a politician being brought to book for his crimes and who had to actually complete a jail sentence. Most of them are released on bail as soon as the media attention goes away and then they continue to have a good time. same thing will happen with this case.
