A Short Biography of Dr Ami Bera, newly elect US Congressman

Ami BeraDr. Ami Bera  was born on March 2, 1965 to  the son of immigrants from India  and  was raised in La Palma, California..

He grew up in a vibrant household, benefiting from traditional values of discipline and hard work, solid educational foundations, and an underlying belief in the American dream.

He has a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University of California at Irvine, earning his MD there in 1991. Most recently, Dr. Bera served as Associate Dean for Admissions at the UC Davis School of Medicine and was the former Chief Medical Officer for the County of Sacramento. Today, at age 47, Ami is running to represent his district in the United States Congress. He lives in Elk Grove with his wife, Janine, and 14-year-old daughter, Sydra.

For over 15 years, Dr. Bera has served the Sacramento region as a physician and educator.

According to him, he has always believed in hard work and community serviceand refuses to accept a future where children and grandchildren don’t have the amazing opportunities that he did.

A first generation American, Ami benefited from California’s public schools, from kindergarten through medical school.

After he graduated, Ami put his degree to work for medicine as Chief Medical Officer. He used his skills as a tough negotiator to fight to reduce the cost of health care, create jobs, and deliver care to tens of thousands of Sacramento residents.

Ami went on to become a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Admissions and Outreach at UC Davis, where he taught the next generation of doctors to care for patients. He helped the student-run clinics find innovative ways to engage with the community and deliver care to those who needed it the most
