Today is the day of Marriages in India. Over 50 000 marriages would take place in the country today. In Delhi alone over 10,000 couples would tie the knot. Almost equal number of couples would tie the knots on Monday.
According to Ravindra Nagar, head priest at the Birla Mandir in central Delhi: “The jupiter and moon are in the appropriate houses on these three days and couples who will get married during this period will stay together for the next seven births.”
“The couple will be blessed with a child within one year of the nuptial,” he added.
Over 10,000 weddings took place in the capital Saturday as well.
According to the municipal authorities, of the 235 banquets and community halls civic bodies have in the city, “majority of them were booked for weddings”.
“Only the smaller ones are empty otherwise all of them are booked – majority of them for marriages,” Yogendra Mann, spokesperson of North and East MCD, told IANS, but he could not confirm the over 10,000 figure.
Nagar said that additional priests have been called in from Haridwar, Rishikesh and Benaras to meet the high rush for weddings.
“I have to solemnize three weddings tonight (Saturday)…It will be a hectic day,” said Anant Tripathi, a priest at the Jhandewalan Hanuman Mandir in central Delhi.
The Delhi traffic police, anticipating jams, were on their toes.
“As of now there are no major jams anywhere, but being a weekend we are prepared for everything,” said a traffic police official.
Heavy traffic is expected on city roads Sunday owing to the massive number weddings coupled with the crowds visiting the India International trade Fair (IITF).
