Abdul Hakim, the man who was the main attraction of Satyamev Jayate Episode on Honor Killings, has himself become victim of an Honor Killing.
He was gunned down on November 22 near  near Adoli village in Bulandshahr district western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday evening, allegedly by his wife’s brothers and uncle. Hakim had gone to his village to meet his ailing mother, while his wife Mehwish was 9 month pregnant.
Reason of Trouble
Abdul Hakim married his neighbor  Mehwish against their families’ opposition of the match.  According to Mehwish, her family was opposed to the match because Hakim was poor and belonged to the ‘lower’ Fakir community. Hakim’s father was earlier allegedly killed by Mehwish’s family in the village, although it was shown as suicide in police records.
The whole matter was tried to be suppressed but when Victim’s Wife Mehwish recorded her statement to media, the issue became prominent.
Mehwish handed over a one-and-a-half-year old audio clip of her conversation with her mother Shabnam to the media in Bulandshahr in which the latter had warned that the community would kill them for their love marriage.
Mehwish says, “I had recorded this conversation in my mobile when we had eloped from the village and were living in hiding in Mumbai. My mother had said that let alone our village Adoli in Bulandshahr, the panchayat will not let us live even in Bhatgarhi, which is the outskirts of the village. She had clearly said that the family would kill us,” she said.
“The murder of my husband on Thursday was a case of honour killing. It was committed by my own family members. They also want to kill me and my one-and-a-half-year old daughter Mantesha. The village panchayat on Saturday night had declared from the loudspeaker that we would also be eliminated soon,” she said.
“They had said they would kill us. And now they have done it by killing my husband. The police could have saved him if they had believed us and provided us security. They are still not cooperating with us. We have registered a named FIR against five persons but the police have arrested only one person – my uncle Asif Anwar. There were more people of my family who had declared that we would be killed and they finally shot dead my husband in daylight. Now they are after me and my daughter’s lives,” she added.
Aamir Khan who was the host of TV show Satyamev Jayate where Abdul HAkim raised his voice against Khap, was shocked to learn the news of the killing of Abdul Hakim.” It’s extremely sad and unfortunate that it has happened. It is unfortunate that people take the law in their own hands and try to justify their acts in the name of honour killing. We have been making attempts that such people are punished for such heinous crimes,”, quoted Aamir.
