New Delhi : Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and former army chief Gen. V.K. Singh have been booked for inciting protesters even as police registered five cases over violent protests over the weekend against the gang-rape of a woman here, police said Monday.
Both Ramdev and Singh were named in one of the cases registered at Parliament Street police station here Dec 23 for provoking mob, rioting and causing damage to public property.
“Of the five cases, one was registered at Parliament Street police station on Dec 22 while two cases were registered at the same police station on Dec 23. However, the fourth and the fifth cases were registered on Dec 23 at Connaught Place and Tilak Marg police station,” said a police officer.
“All the cases were registered for rioting, breaking parameters of law and order and damaging public property. No one has been arrested in these cases,” added the officer.
Protesters led by Baba Ramdev and Singh clashed with police at Jantar Mantar Sunday afternoon when they were prevented from marching towards India Gate, the epicentre of protests against the gang-rape in a moving bus Dec 16.
“After a brief speech at Jantar Mantar, Ramdev along with Singh and others started marching towards India Gate but they were stopped by police. As soon as Ramdev and Singh got down from the dais, police cordoned off the area and the protesters sat on the spot,” said the officer.
They started marching towards India Gate and tried to break the barricades following which the police resorted to use of force, he said.
Yesterday Baba Ramdev had called for police action against anti-gangrape protestors at Delhi’s India Gate on Sunday as brutal and accused the authorities of being high handed. “I condemn police brutality against the peaceful youngsters,” said Ramdev.
“If police will stop us then we will march barefooted. The rapists should be hanged. The government is defending the rapists. We demand the rapists be hanged and fast-track courts to be set up to judge rape cases. Wherever 40 to 50 protesters gather, police arrest them. Why is this government doing such injustice with protesters who are demanding justice?” he said earlier
