Highlights of Major Events in Indian Railways in 2012

Indian Railway has undergone significant development in 2012. From Raising the Fares for first time in 8 years, to high profile drama involving Railway Minister, it underwent structural changes.

Indian Railway adds 727 km of Railway Lines in 2012

A total of 727 km of railway lines were added across the country in 2011-12, with Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh accounting for the bulk, parliament was told Friday.

Railway Minister P.K. Bansal said in the Rajya Sabha that 130 km was added in Uttar Pradesh and 120 km in Andhra Pradesh, two states through which most northern and southern trains pass through.

This was followed by West Bengal (97 km), Jharkhand (69 km), Bihar (60 km) and Tamil Nadu (54 km).

In contrast, only eight kilometres of rail line was added in Maharashtra and none in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

 

941 thefts on Indian goods trains in 2011-12


The number of cases of theft and pilferage on Indian goods trains in 2011 was 941.

Minister of State for Railways informed the Rajya Sabha that the number stood at 1,391 in 2009 and 1,372 in 2010.

He said the railways had taken several corrective steps, including by asking the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to escort goods trains carrying valuable commodities in vulnerable sections.

 

Indian Railways paid  Rs.497 lakhs in compensation in 2012
The railways paid Rs.497,72 lakh in compensation in 2011-12 to families of the dead and those injured in train accidents.

Minister of State for Railways K.J. Surya Prakash Reddy told the Rajya Sabha in a written statement that this figure stood at Rs.265.81 lakh in 2009-10 and Rs.585.79 in 2010-11.

The statement, however, clarified that compensation paid in a given year was not related to the accidents or casualties suffered in that year.

The minister said the railways paid compensation only after a green signal from the Railway Claims Tribunal.

For death and permanent disability, Rs.4 lakh was paid while those injured got between Rs.32,000 and Rs.369,000 depending on the gravity of the injury.
