Over 250 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been apprehended in Mumbai in the first few days of December alone, taking the total to 1,380.
“Starting Dec 1, we have aprrehended 252 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, including 56 women and 64 children,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Sanjay Shintre told IANS.
Most of the illegal immigrants have been working in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district as labourers and domestic help, he added.
According to Shintre, so far 1,380 Bangladeshi immigrants have been arrested and the process of their deportation have been initiated.
Last week, 57 Bangladeshi immigrants were apprehended after raids were conducted in different parts of the city.
“They had revealed that there are many more illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who live in rural Thane in areas like Mira Road, Naigaon, Bhayandar and Nalasopara, following which we had conducted more raids,” Shintre said.
He said that the legal procedure of deporting the accused back to their country has been started. However, it is a long process and it will take a long time to complete the formalities.
