Mansa Musa I  was the ruler of the Malian Empire which is now modern day Ghana, Timbuktu and Mali. Hewas born in 1280 and had a personal net worth of $400 billion (£248 billion) by the time he died in 1337.
However after his death, his wealth had diminished as his heirs struggled with civil war and invasions.
