Gurgaon: An online petition and a twitter campaign against 28-year-old rapper Honey Singh led to a New Year’s Eve concert by him at Gurgaon’s Bristol hotel being cancelled at the last minute.
The petition, “GM of The Bristol Hotel Gurgaon India: Stop Honey Singh’s performance”, was posted following the death of a 23-year-old victim of a brutal gang-rape in Delhi.
However, some contradicting reports say that  the Concert took place in the City. The Bristol utilized media to claim that the concert was cancelled, but it actually took place.
According to a report in TOI, as early as 6pm in the evening on Monday, staff and management around the venue sounded ambiguous about the late-night appearance of Honey Singh, even as the lights were being installed on the specially mounted stage.
Outside the gates, at about 9pm, Gurgaon resident Robin Maigi stood waiting with a female friend, wondering whether or not he should buy the tickets. “I don’t know. The ticket guys are saying that he is coming. But I heard it reported that the show is cancelled. I am trying to figure it out,” he said.
Honey Singh’s songs like “Lak 28 kudi da”, “Brown rang” and “Angrezi beat” are peppy and popular among masses. But it is his 2006 song “Ch**t”, which was  pinpointed in the petition by Kalpana Mishra on www.change.org.
The petition read: “The nation is outraged at the ease with which rape happens, at the unnecessary death of a young woman whose entire life lay before her. We know that these rapes occur because in the India of today rape is acceptable to many men.”
The petition was closed after it reached 2500 Signatures. The Original petition can be found here
Even filmmaker Kunal Kohli is against Honey Singh’s gig.
“Honey Singh should not be allowed to perform in India. To write lyrics like that is disgusting, to be allowed to perform them, a shame. Come on Gurgaon, show the world, boycott Honey Singh, two days after Nirbhaya/Damini dies, you can’t let him sing such lewd songs,” Kohli posted on Twitter.
A  first information report (FIR) was also  filed in Lucknow against Yo Yo Honey Singh on Monday over allegedly vulgar lyrics of his song.
The complaint was lodged by senior Indian Police Service officer Amitabh Thakur for the “extremely vulgar and indecent songs” like “Main hun balatkaria” (I am a rapist).
The FIR, number 606, was registered at Gomtinagar police station in the city.
Thakur told IANS that he found the lyrics extremely vulgar, lewd and indecent, and felt that the song acted as an offensive catalyst for crime against women.
FIR has been registered under Sections 292, 293 and 294 of the Indian Penal Code that deal with obsenity at public place.
Other than Punjabi films, Honey Singh has sung songs for Hindi films “Cocktail”, “Khiladi 786”, “Race 2” and “Son of Sardar”.
