Bihar is one among 6 States of India which have appointed a dedicated Protection Officer for Women. The  other five are Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Kerala, West Bengal and Delhi.
The Protection Officers are supposed to prevent Domestic Violence against Women.  This was informed in Parliament by Woman and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath.
Tirath also said that the central government was coming out with a new scheme for providing funds to states from the next financial year for implementation of the act and to ensure that independent protection officers are appointed by all states.
“I had held a consultation meeting with the state governments, where they had asked for money to implement the prevention of domestic violence act. For this, we are getting a new scheme to provide assistance to state governments to implement the act. This will begin from the next financial year,” Tirath said during question hour.
Replying to a question by CPI MP from Kerala D. Raja, she said, the National Commission for Women’s (NCW) recommendations on implementation of the prevention of domestic violence act have been incorporated.
“All states have said that they have appointed protection officers. But we have directed them that the protection officers should be independent. So far, only six states have appointed full-time POs: Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Haryana, Kerala, West Bengal and Delhi,” she said.
