DMK pulls out from UPA Government over UN Resolution on Sri Lanka

Tamil Nadu based DMK  has announced that it would no longer remain with the UPA Government at Center lead by Congress. The Party has 5 ministers in the Coalition Government who are expected to resign any time.

Reason of Withdrawl

DMK, headed by M Karunanidhi took this extreme step over India’s Resolution in United Nations against Sri Lanka. Apparently, the party wants more severe terms to be introduced in the resolution. It wants Government to include the words like “genocide” to describe the deaths of Tamils during Sri Lanka’s civil war.

In past it has often blamed Government for adopting soft stand against Sri Lanka Government in the matters concerning war crimes on Tamil Minorities.

Political Implications

The Government has got no threat to its majority in Parliament even after DMK’s exit but it has increased the UPA Govt’s vulnerability to the pressure mounted by regional political parties like Samajwadi Party.

Also, the Future of several new reforms which were in pipeline has also been shadowed as the Government does not have 2/3 majority in Parliament.

The DMK has 18 seats in the lower of house of parliament, which made it the biggest ally in UPA Government.

The government needs 271 seats out of 543 to survive any possible confidence vote. After the pullout of the DMK, the Congress alliance has about 235 seats, but they could narrowly survive any vote with the outside support of the BSP and SP.

Aftermath

The Government is planning to bring in a strong  resolution on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue in Parliament. The decision was taken after the Congress Core Group meeting, hours after DMK chief M Karunanidhi announced that his party would withdraw support to the UPA.  According to TV Reports, the DMK president has said that he will review its decision if a resolution is brought before Parliament.

On the issue of a resolution moved at the UNHCR against Sri Lanka which DMK wants India to support,  the government is examining the final draft which reached New Delhi late last night.
