Don’t Leave India: Supreme Court to Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini

Supreme Court of India has asked Italian Ambassador to India Daniele Mancini not to leave India until further orders. The Court passed orders in a plea made by  Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy.

Daniele Mancini has signed as the surety for the two Italian Marines whom Italy has refused to hand back. It is expected that Daniele Mancini would be implicated in this case after Italian Marines failed to keep their words.

Earlier, Daniele Mancini, has said that he will not leave India until he is made persona non grata, meaning an unwelcome person, over the Italian marines row. His statement came amidst reports that India was looking to expel the envoy from the country. “I will not leave this country till a competent authority makes me persona non grata.. I am more than glad to live in this country for years to come,” he had said.

It may be noted that the Supreme Court’s deadline to the Italian marines to return is March 22 and any action against the ambassador can be taken only after they fail to return by that date. The court has asked Mancini to respond to its  notice by March 18.

Italy has insisted it is on solid legal ground in seeking international arbitration in the case. Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi told reporters in Israel, “We have juridically solid reasons to proceed in the direction of international arbitration The Indian government is amply apprised of all it needs to know about our reasons, as do many of our partners.”

Sources in Indian External Afairs Ministry reveal that it has started gathering the European Union Support for the Return of the two Marines  and may escalate the matter to International Court of Justice
