President Pranab Mukherjee targeted by Bomb Explosion in Dhaka

Dhaka: President of Indian Pranab Mukherjee,  who is on his First overseas tour to Dhaka was targeted by a Bomb Explosion near his hotel. However no harm was done and President is reported to be Safe.

Around 2 PM today, a homemade crude bomb of low intensity was hurled outside the Sonargaon Pan-Pacific hotel in Dhaka where President Pranab Mukherjee is staying.

Two persons came on a motorcycle and hurled the bomb wrapped in a cap near the SAARC fountain, about 50 yards away from the hotel at a street intersection. The two however managed to escape and no one has been arrested in this connection so far.

Bangladesh is undergoing a mild civil war these days and there are frequent clashes between various groups over the matter of hanging the Criminals of 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war in which India actively participated. Several groups oppose the hanging of War Criminals. Even Former PM Bangladesh Begum Khalida Jiya has refused to meet President of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee

As per a Press Release by President’s Office,  Life in and around the Hotel in Dhaka where the President is staying is completely normal. None of the delegation members heard any explosion nor knew of any such incident.

Indian security officials have expressed the view that this was a minor explosion. Bursting of such cocktails are common in Bangladesh during hartals and cannot be described as a bomb.

The President addressed 10,000 students in an open air pandal in the Dhaka University this morning to great acclamation from the students. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the President of Bangladesh who is also Chancellor of the University at the function. He is looking forward to meeting other dignitaries this afternoon and the President of Bangladesh once again this evening.
