Rajashree Mohanty, Son of Odisha Minister arrested in Dowry Case

Rajashree Mohanty, the Son of Former Odisha Minister and MLA, Raghunath Mohanty has bee arrested by the Police today in the Dowry Harassment case filed by his Wife Barsa Swony Choudhury.

Rajashree is likely to be produced before the court today, where a Bail is unlikely for him.

The Case was filed by Barsa Swony Choudhury at a Police Station at Balashore, she alleged that she was subjected to Physical and Mental Torture ever since she was married to Rajshree Mohanty in June last year. She mentioned that her father gave a dowry of Rs 10 lakhs as demanded by her in-laws, but later they increased the demand to Rs 25 Lakhs plus a Scorpio.

She was brutally tortured by in-laws, she was left without food for several days. She also claimed that there was an attempt to kidnap and kill her on March 13. However she survived as other members of her family reached the place while some unknown people were about to abduct her.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by Barsha, a case has been registered against the minister and others under section 498 (A), 506, 448 and 34 of IPC. The Case was registered against her Husband Rajashree Mohanty,  Father in-law Raghunath Mohanty , Mother-in-law Pritilata Mohanty and few other members of family.

This also led her father-in-law Raghunath Mohanty to resign after the pressure from opposition and media mounted heavily.  “I have submitted my resignation to the Chief Minister on moral grounds,” Mohanty said after submitting his resignation from  as Law and Urban Development Minister of Odisha.

There has been huge media and public outcry against this dowry harassment case by the family of a Elected Legislator. Opposition parties are  demanding the arrest of the minister and his family members also.
