Mumbai: 36 Cops in Maharashtra have been suspended for accepting bribe as caught in a sting operation. The Sting Operation was conducted by an activist Kasim Shaikh between March 9 and March 26.
The Policemen have been caught on a  camera allegedly accepting bribes to turn a blind eye to illegal building constructions at various places in the city. Though most of the suspended cops are constables, but those ranked above from the sub-inspector to inspector level have also faced action.
While the Mumbai Police has initiated an inquiry against the accused policemen, the Maharashtra government has also taken a note of the expose. “This is the first time that action has been taken against so many policemen. If more senior police officials are involved, action will be taken against them,” said Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil.
The Action comes a week after 74 people were killed in am Illegal Building Collapse in the the Mumbra area of Mumbai.
