Meet Narendra Dabholkar, a man spent Life fighting Superstition

Narendra Dabholkar, a Rationalist and Anti-Superstition Activist from Maharashtra was killed today by unidentified Gunmen on August 20, 2013 at around 7:20 AM.

He was shot at the back of his head on Omkareshwar bridge and later succumbed to the injuries at Sassoon hospital. Two bullets went straight in his head. Two gunmen on a motorcycle are suspected to have carried out the firing two youths of 25 to 26 year old. Dabholkar was found dead in a pool of blood at Omkareshwar bridge of the city

Narendra Dabholkar was the founding president of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti an organization set up to eradicate superstition.

Narendra Dabholkar was the youngest of ten siblings, the eldest of whom was late educationist, Gandhian  and socialist Devdatta Dabholkar.  He did his schooling at New English School Satara, Willingdon College Sangli. He was a medical doctor, having gained his qualification from Miraj Medical College, Miraj, and has worked as a doctor for twelve years, before he joined active social work.

He was associated with movements for social justice, such as Baba Adhava’s One village-one well agitation. He associated himself with movements for eradication of superstition i.e., Akhil Bharatiya Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti ABANS.  He got separated from ABANS and founded Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti i.e. Committee for Eradication of Superstition of Maharashtra in 1989 and became executive president of it.

He was also the founding member of Parivartan, a de-addiction centre located in Satara. He was closely associated with Sanal Edamaruku, a leading Indian rationalist and president of Rationalist International, who now lives in exile in Europe following death threats and blasphemy cases against him. Dabholkar was the editor of a reknowned Marathi weekly Sadhana. Sadhana was founded by the late Sane Guruji. He was exposing all type of superstitions (andhashraddha) in the Society.

He was trying to bring ‘anti superstition and black magic bill’ in Maharashtra. Certain sections of Warkari sect opposed him for this.  Dablokar had said that CM has failed to discuss Anti-Jaadu Tona Bill.
