What is 84 Kosi Parikrama or Yatra organized by VHP ?

84 Kosi Yatra or Parikrama is a Travel Campaign launched by Vishwa Hindu PArishad (VHP) starting from Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) on August 25.  A Kos  is approximately 3 Km and the perimeter of the whole campaign is 250 km, which the Sages and Members of VHP shall traverse between August 25 and September 13. It will pass through the five districts of Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Gonda, Basti and Bahraich.

According to VHP, the yatra’s aim is to get blessings from Lord Ram and discuss the present situation with the members. From there whatever the saints  decide and announce, would be taken back to the whole country and the message will be spread,” Vinod Bansal, media chief of the Delhi unit of the VHP said.

Being regarded as the VHP’s biggest public movement after the ‘purna aahuti mahayagya’ in 2002, the VHP is also expected to drum up support for the Ram temple issue during the 20-day affair.

Ever since this Yatra was announced, it has run into political controversy. First UP Govt denied permission for the Yatra and later it imposed restraints order in Uttar Pradesh. It also issued Arrest Warrant against several UP Leaders.

The national, state and local level leaders of the VHP against whom arrest warrants have been issued include its chief Ashok Singhal, Ram Vilas Vedanti and Pravin Togadia.

However, the VHP has said that it would go ahead with the ’84 Kosi Yatra’, a day after the UP government imposed a ban on it.

Senior VHP Leader Ashok Singhal has accused SP leader Azam Khan for flaring up this yatra issue. “Our talks with SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav were held in the most cordial and peaceful manner. However, things reached a flashpoint only after Azam entered the scene and adopted a policy of confrontation and the government was forced to buckle under the pressure of vote bank politics,” he said.

It has earned the support of Right Wing Political parties including BJP.

Former BJP MP RV Vedanti said the yatra would be held as proposed from August 25 to September 13. “The yatra will not be stopped. We will face bullets and lathis but will not back out and ensure that the yatra is carried out. We will not stop saints coming from across the country to participate in the yatra,” Vedanti said.

Backing VHP, UP state BJP chief Laxmikant Bajpayee said: “Let me inform the government that the 84 Kosi Yatra can be held anytime of the year. The government has only banned the yatra to appease a section of the population.”Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his senior minister Shivpal Yadav, however, vowed that the ban on the yatra would be strictly implemented.
