2 Indians among 59 feared dead in Westgate Center Shootings

Two Indians are among the 59 killed in an attack on Westgate Shopping mall  on September 21 by the Terrorist group Al Shabaab. The Islamist gunmen are also holding about 30  people as hostages. The number of those injured non-fatally has jumped to 175 which includes four Indians and several US nationals.

The deceased Indian nationals are 40-year-old Sridhar Natarajan and an eight-year-old boy Paramshu Jain. Natarajan, a resident of Tamil Nadu, was working in a local pharmaceutical firm in Kenya while the deceased boy is the son of a local branch manager of the Bank of Baroda.

India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said in New Delhi that the Mission is providing all medical aid to the four Indian nationals injured in the attack.   He said India fully sympathises with Kenya and extends support to Kenyan government.

Earlier in morning, he had tweeted that according to the information available from the Indian diplomats in Nairobi, two Indian nationals were killed and four injured in the attack.

In a statement in New Delhi, the External Affairs Ministry said the Indian High Commission in Nairobi is in close touch with the Kenyan government and leaders of the Indian community. All members of the High Commission are safe.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also written to Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, condemning the “heinous and senseless” terrorist attack.

“I was deeply shocked and saddened by the brutal terror attack yesterday on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. This incident is a stark reminder that the persisting menace of terrorism remains a formidable challenge that calls for a concerted and sustained response from the global community. India condemns in the strongest terms this heinous and senseless assault, which has snuffed out so many innocent lives, including nationals of both our countries.” Dr. Singh wrote.

The Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that some of his close relatives were killed in the attack. He has vowed to bring the attackers to justice and blamed the security forces for the lapse.

The Somali Islamist group al-shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.
