Nina Davuluri, an Indian-American Beauty, has been crowned Miss America 2014. She is the first Indian to be awarded with Miss America Title. Earlier, she was crowned as Miss New York in July 2014.
At a function on September 15, in Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, she was crowned with the Miss America 2014 Title. Davuluri’s first runner-up was Miss California, Crystal Lee.
She burst into tears after getting crowned. Speaking after getting crowned she said, “I’m so happy this organisation has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
Davuluri wore a zebra print bikini for the swimsuit preliminary and an elegant canary-yellow dress for the evening gown preliminary.
She had performed a classical Bollywood fusion dance along with an Irish Mix for her talent competition. She lists Bollywood Dance as her primary talent on Miss America official page. She is a trained Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam danseuse.
“I was the first Indian Miss New York and I’m so proud to be the first Indian Miss America,” she said in another interview.
Davuluri also took a minute to say how proud she was of her talent portion of the show. “It’s the first time Bollywood has ever been performed on the Miss America stage and it’s such an honor for myself, my family and the Indian community as well.”
Her mother Sheila Ranjani and father Davuluri Koteshwara Choudhary hail from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh and migrated to US in 1981. She was born on April 20, 1989 at Syracuse, her family later moved to Michigan.
In 2007 her family moved to Fayetteville, where her father is an obstetrician/gynecologist. She dreams to become a doctor intends to use the Miss America prize money $50,000 for her higher education in Medicine. She is an alumnus of University of Michigan. She also holds the title of Miss Syracuse 2013.
Her parents and sister were in the Atlantic City to cheer her on, along with a group of more than 30 family members, friends during the whole beauty pageant.
Apart from mastering the art of Beauty Pageants, she is also good at studies. In past she has won several Scholastic Honors like, Dean’s List; Michigan Merit Award and National Honor Society Award.
After the traditional frolic in the Atlantic City surf on Monday morning, she will head to the scene of a devastating boardwalk fire in the New Jersey communities of Seaside park and Seaside Heights on Monday afternoon.
Miss America is a beauty pageant that awards scholarships to young women from the 50 states of USA along with 3 other territories. The winner of this beauty pageant is awarded with the title of “Miss America” for one year. The competition is held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
