Shazia Ilmi, the noted Aam Aadmi Party Leader would be contesting 2013 Delhi Elections from Rama Krishna Puram (RK Puram) Constituency.
Shazia, who was one of the key figures for Anna Hazare led Anti Corruption Movement in 2011, is also the National executive member and one of prominent women leaders of Aam Aadmi Party.
She is a journalist by profession. In last 15 years, she has worked as a journalist and a correspondent with Zee news, Start news, Times of India etc. She has been involved in the fight against corruption right from initial phases of this movement and played a significant role in the Janlokpal movement. On issues dealing with women and environment, Shazia has done a comendable work in last few years.
When asked about her contesting from a seat where Muslim Minority consist of 4-5% only, Shazia says, “I wanted to break away from identity politics. You have Hindu politics, Muslim politics, Jat politics… So, I said why not gender politics, why not fight for gender justice? I want to be in politics as a citizen of this country, not as a Muslim.â€
Shazia wants to highlight Gender Related issues in her Poll Campaign.
“I chose RK Puram because this is where the infamous Nirbhaya rape case happened, also where the bestial rapists hail from and ironically where the sitting MLA is heading the Delhi Commission for Women. I want to highlight women’s safety as a key Election and a national issue”, she was quoted saying.
Despite immense popularity, it wont be easy for her to raise vote on Gender issues because the incumbent MLA from R K Puram, Barkha Singh is also a women.
The Nation waits for December 4 to know whether Sazia would taste the fruits of success. We wish her a good luck though!
