A Comprehensive Overview of Tehelka Journalist Sexual Assault Case

The Tehelka Journalist Sexual Assault Case involving its Founder Tarun Tejpal came to light on November 18, when a Woman Journalist working with the Magazine alleged that she was sexually assaulted and molested by Mr. Tejpal on November 7 and November 8, during Tehelka’s Thinkfest 2013 event in at Grand Hyatt Goa.

The Victim lodged a complaint with Tehelka’s Managing Editor Shoma Choudhury where she alleged Tejpal Sexually assaulted her in the elevator in the Club House section of the Grand Hyatt five-star resort  and demanded a public apology and the constitution of an internal committee to investigate the matter, which was setup under Urvashi Butalia.  Later Tejpal voluntarily stepped down from the post of Editor-in-Chief for 6 months.

In an Email, sent to the victim on November 19  Tejpal apparently admitted committing the crime and rendered apology.  The Victim wrote back on November 21, saying that  Tejpal sexually molested her on two separate occasions and that he violated her bodily integrity and trust.

The matter is being investigated by Goa Police and Delhi Police separately, while Tarun Tejpal has demanded a probe by an Independent Agency.

As per sources, the CCTV footage  only shows Tejpal and the alleged victim walking into a lift and then coming out. There is no visual evidence of what happened inside the elevator.

The National Commission for Women has approached Mumbai police seeking protection for the victim and claimed that her family was being pressurized to protect him.

Meanwhile, there were protests outside the Tehelka office in GK II in south Delhi. About 20-25 members of the ABVP burned copies of the magazine demanding Tejpal’s arrest. Sources said most of the employees did not show up for duty on Friday, and only three-four employees were present.

Police might  press rape charges against him, if the complaint of the girl is substantiated. In that case Tejpal faces more than 10 years of Prison.
