What is Cyclonic Storm Lehar?

Cyclone Lehar is a tropical Cyclonic Storm expected to hit Coastal region of Andhra Pradesh on November 28 with winds speeding to 190 km/hr.  It is expected to hit Kakinada area of Andhra Pradesh and might move north westwards.

It originated as an area of low pressure in  Pacific ocean on 18 November. Later it drifted westwards and entered the Bay of Bengal, where it quickly intensified into a cyclonic storm.

Timeline

  1. Nov 18: A low pressure area formed over the South China Sea
  2. Nov 22: It reaches Bay of Bengal.
  3. Nov 23: India Meteorological Department upgrades it to cyclonic storm and the name Lehar is assigned.
  4. Nov 24: Cyclone appears near Andaman & Nicobar causing heavy winds with torrential rainfall.
