No One Knows what Google intends to do with its growing arsenal of highly skilled Robots, but the Search Engine Giant made its 8th Robotic Company Acquisition in last 6 months as Boston Dynamics.
The company builds robots that can walk and run and have names like BigDog, Cheetah, WildCat and Atlas. Cheetah is said to be able to run faster than Usain Bolt.
Boston Dynamics does not make commercial Robots, but it does supply those to Pentagon and other segments of US Defense. The Company is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Under a $10.8 million contract, Boston Dynamics is currently supplying DARPA with a set of humanoid robots named Atlas to participate in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, a two-year contest with a $2 million prize. The contest’s goal is creating a class of robots that can operate in natural disasters and catastrophes like the nuclear power plant meltdown in Fukushima, Japan.
Products that BD had demonstrated in recent years include BigDog, a motorized robot that can handle ice and snow, an animal-like robot called Cheetah that can run at 29 mile-per-hour and an eerily convincing humanoid known as PETMAN.
Boston Dynamics has also designed robots that can climb walls and trees as well as other two- and four-legged walking robots.
Google is not saying how much money it paid for Boston Dynamics, and said that it does not plan to release financial information on any of the other eight robotics companies it has purchased in the last 6 months.
The Exact purpose why Google is acquiring these Silicon Animals is yet unknown, however it is seen much in tandem with Amazon testing Drones for Home Delivery. These Robots are under the command of Andy Rubin, who founded Android but now runs Google’s robotics division.
Some Reports say that Google intends to build a new class of autonomous systems that might do anything from warehouse work to package delivery and even elder care.
