BP Team got a chance to interact with her about her upcoming release. In this Interview she talks about variety of topics including her past life and future plans.

BP Team: What genre of Music do you aim to get into? How have you been preparing for it?

Soumita: Well, if a genre called versatility ever existed, then I would certainly qualify for that. Look, my kind of music is some that never lacks melody and something that suits my vocals, be it Rock, Pop, Jazz or my very own Bengali. Music is my soul and I never missed practice even while preparing for my Joint Entrance Examination.

BP Team: Who is your inspiration? What is your first memory of being inspired by music?
Soumita: In Music, I idolize my parents. My mother first took me to the doors of Music. Even today she is my best critic and I have a learnt a lot from her. My Father is also into the Music Profession and this provided me with a perfect environment to pursue music ever since I was a kid.

BP Team: When did you first start singing?
Soumita: I was 3 years old and was still in the Kindergartens. Thanks to my father, even at that age I knew almost 5-10 songs of Rabindra Sangeet. I made my first stage performance at that age itself. One day the Head-Mistress of my School invited my Mother to her office and told that they have decided to keep a solo performance for me. My mother was shocked to hear this because I was only 3 years old and had never performed before. That kick started my musical journey.

BP Team: Which type of music are you most inclined to ?
Soumita: It is Rabindra Sangeet from which I started this journey and still today, I feel most attached to it. I am working on several songs of Tagore at present. I am also planning to release a song as a tribute to Tagore on his 151st birth anniversary.

BP Team: What’s the best advice you ever received?
Soumita: I often receive much advice from friends, family and well wishers. I started of with covers of Bollywood numbers and modern Bengali songs and my friends advised me to start off with compilation first followed by composition. One of my friends advised me to pay attention to my screen appearance and since then I have become screen conscious.

BP Team: How did you catch Media’s Eyes ?
Soumita: My first big break in Media was a through a performance at CLT Calcutta. It was praised immensely by The Telegraph. After winning several competitions I was also featured in Electronic Media like ETV Bangla . I was also interviewed by J U community radio which indeed proved to be a turning point for me followed by Big FM and so on
BP Team:. Tell us about your Family
Soumita: My Family includes my Dad and my Mom and is extended to Musical Instruments like Harmonium and Tanpuras. My father is a renowned singer in the field of Rabindra-Sangeet while my mother works as a critic as well as she composes scripts for shows. This Environment always pushed me towards music ever since childhood.

BP Team:. If you weren’t into Music, what would you have been doing?
Soumita: Frankly, I would have chosen painting as my full-time profession in that case. If I were in times of legends like Van Gaugh and Frida Kahlo, I would have definitely left my profession to compete with them.

BP Team: How do you ensure a balance between Music and your Academics?
Soumita: Music is my passion while Architecture is my profession. My profession keeps the artist within me alive while Music is the Relaxation to my soul. I follow a routine life which allows me to take out time for Music from the busy schedule of Academics.

BP Team: Tell us how do you handle criticism?
Soumita: You may call me arrogant, but honestly I don’t pay attention to criticism. Remember Taylor Swift saying,” People haven’t been there for me but Music always was”. I dont give a damn to unnecessary backstabbings or criticism Criticism neither motivates me nor discourages me.

BP Team: So, what is your next Music project ?
Soumita: It is a Tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his 152nd birthday. I am busy working on a song “Woh Din Suhane“. It is a romantic and soothing song. It is lovely song that Tagore composed for a dance Drama called “Shapmochan”. I don’t believe in half hearted things and Love to me is a selfless thing. You may not be necessarily loved back but loving someone, but selfless and full-hearted dedication is the most worthy gift one can ever be gift someone. This Song tells about Selfless love.

The Lyrics of Song translate into
“The wind has muttered ,
The same crazy words as my own,
And in the sky the moonbeams spread,
Assuming a strange likeness to your smile”.

“A full moon overhead,
Lit our paths,
And there we met,
In that auspicious moment.”

BP Team: Ok Soumita, tell us about your first crush.
Soumita: Well, I have a big crush on Enrique Iglesias. He was my first crush. Today the list is large and includes the likes of Pakistani Singer Shehzad Roy and Daniel Craig. Among cricketers,  I like Irfan Pathan very much, but none among Bollywood hunks.

BP Team: Any advice to those aspiring a career in music ?
Soumita: To such folks, I must say, “Follow your Heart and Passion. Do things that make you happy. Don’t go too much after critics. Some people just keep talking, don’t give a damn to what they say. Always keep a positive approach in life. I would love to say ,”Please take it positively if people get over curious about you”.

Few days back, an Officer in West Bengal Civil Services made a Fake Id of mine on Facebook in order to get hold of my fans. At first, I considered it sick, but later on I felt that such squatting comes only with success. The key point is that never get discouraged with such incidents and keep marching ahead.
