India Can Be Maritime Trade Hub Say China & Australia

The two-day maritime trade and security conference commenced in Chennai where experts from India, US, UK, China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia and Philippines participated. The panel deliberated upon the maritime geo-politics in the Indo-Pacific region. The panel were also seen discussing about the security challenges and maritime trade.

The conference saw startling facts come to light with regard to trade in India. It stated that 90 per cent of the trade happens through the sea and by 2018 India’s dependence for trade through the sea will be 90%. Experts believe that India has the potential to become a maritime hub because of its strategic location. Speaking during the conference, Dr David Brewster, visiting expert for strategic and defence studies centre from the Australian National University believes on arm building cooperation between the countries in the Indian ocean and China within the Indian ocean.

 

Dr Liu Zongyi, a fellow researcher from the Institute for World Economic Studies said  both the countries should focus on economic cooperation shoving aside the military confrontation.
