India Salvage Pride, Finish Fih Men Wc On Winning Note

India ended their World Cup journey one notch below their eight-place finish at New Delhi edition in 2010. Buoyed by two goals by Akashdeep Singh, India posted a comfortable 3-0 win over Asian champions South Korea to finish a lowly ninth in the FIH men’s hockey World Cup at the Kyocera Stadium. After finishing the tournament on a winning note Indian coach Terry Walsh and Vice-Captain Rupinder Pal Singh expressed their satisfaction on the team’s improved performance .

With this win in the ninth-tenth place playoff match, Men in Blue managed to avenge their loss to South Korea in the finals of last year’s Asia Cup. Though coach Terry Walsh was disappointed with the journey but was a contented  man to finish off the tournament on a winning note. Pleased with his team’s performance Walsh said that the team’s graph depicted a real growth.

 

India played with just 10 players for ten minutes in the last quarter when defender Gurbaz Singh was sent off with a yellow card after a deliberate obstruction to stop a Korean striker sprinting down the left flank. Rupinder Pal Singh the Vice-Captain and the strong defender of the team shared a mixed feeling.
