Congress President Sonia Gandhi sent a letter to PM Narendra Modi asking him to take swift action in evacuating all the Indian nationals from the affected area in Iraq and ensure their safe return to India.

40 Indians have been kidnapped in the strife-torn Iraq and expressing concern over this crisis situation Sonia urged Modi to step up diplomatic efforts required to ensure the safe return of the people taken hostage.

Gandhi condemned the abduction of the innocent civilians as a cowardly and despicable act which has created a lot of distress to the affected families.

Sonia offered Congress’ backing for all the diplomatic efforts needed to tackle the situation. Gandhi added that the current situation of Iraq was a matter of international concern.
