24 Year Old and Blind NL Beno Zephine gets 343 Rank in UPSC 2013

There is an old saying where there is a will there is a way and that holds true for NL Beno Zephine.

Despite being visually impaired this 24 year old fought all odds to emerge victorious and secure an All India rank of 343 in UPSC exams.

NL Beno Zephine is visually impaired. Life is dark and gloomy for her but her mind is filled with light. Dreaming to enter the IAS cadre, she had been waiting for her UPSC results. Finally t she is a happy girl with the 343rd rank in her kitty.

Things got easier for Zephine as she had the determination of steel to crack the exam. She not only cracked civil services but she also cleared other competitive exams. She did everything possible to make things happen. She got books brailled. She took help from her father and friends.

She regularly asked her father to read the newspapers for her. She would take crucial guidance from her mentors and those training her were impressed. Beno is grateful that her parents have been with her through thick and thin.

Beno is one of 100 odd candidates from Tamil Nadu who made it to the civil services this year. She had to juggle preparing for a PhD in English literature from Bharathiar University with a full time job as a probationary officer in SBI.

She downloaded the Jaws screen reader to use technology to the fullest. Her father works for the railways and mother a homemaker.

Beno’s sole aim now is to serve the country and serve well.
