The ATV-5 Georges Lemaitre was launched on July 29, 2014, delivering supplies to the ISS after 14 days in orbit.

Its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere is scheduled for Sunday, and will mark the end of the ATV missions. The first in the series set off in 2008.

Originally, NASA and ESA scientists had hoped to attempt a so-called “shallow dive”, a longer-term method that could have yielded more information for researchers.

However, it was canceled last minute due to a problem with one of the vehicle’s power chains.

Instead, the ATV-5 is on its way to perform a standard steep dive into the Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.
