Nadia: West Bengal’s Nadia district observed a complete shutdown on Tuesday to protest against the gang rape of a 72-year-old nun.
All business establishments downed their shutters and educational institutions remained closed in Nadia, about 120 kilometres from Kolkata. Traffic was thin as police personnel patrolled the deserted streets.
The nun is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The state government led by Trinamool Congress party has come under fire for not being able to arrest the culprits even as CCTV cameras have captured their images.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee convoy was blocked by protesters when she visited the hospital to meet the gangrape survivor.
Slamming the incident, the editor of Mission Gate Business Association, Sushanto Saha, came down heavily on Mamata Banerjee for failing to nab the culprits. Meanwhile, opposition parties have condemned the gruesome act.
