Amritsar: Women cadre of India’s paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF), who had set out on a month-long camel safari to spread the message of women empowerment, reached the final destination of their journey in Amritsar city of Punjab on Saturday.
Apart from highlighting women empowerment, the contingent also sought to raise awareness about the hardships faced by the force in keeping the country safe. BSF has tied up with Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) for the expedition, which was led by Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest.
A total of 20 women participated in the expedition, a part of BSF’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. Speaking about the choice of camels as a mode of transport, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF, MA Farooqui, said that camels made for a viable transport medium in arid areas. The women officials were given 10 days of special training in the desert of Rann of Kutch and also in various other environments.
All the women were put through fitness and stamina tests. The expedition was flagged off on February 24 from Bhuj city in Gujarat and it passed through various border villages of Gujarat and Rajasthan before finally concluding at Wagah border in Amritsar.
