Narendra Modi pays homage to sacred Mahabodhi tree in Sri Lanka

Anuradhapura: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid homage to sacred Mahabodhi tree in Sri Lanka’s northern city of Anuradhapura.

Modi dressed in white kurta arrived with his entourage to pay his respects to the fig tree which is surrounded by railing and placed on a mould.

It is said to be the southern branch of the historical Mahabodhi tree in Bihar’s Bodh Gaya, where Lord Budhha is believed to have attained enlightenment.

Modi’s trip to Sri Lanka is the first in 28 years by an Indian Prime Minister.

Narendra Modi also addressed a gathering at Jaffna Cultural Centre and Library. Modi said that Jaffna has connected all the people through a library and cultural centre. He added that India is proud to have an opportunity to establish a unique and World level cultural centre in Jaffna.

Modi also assured to all Sri Lankan citizens that the work India has started will be completed well in time and will be better than their imagination. The PM also expressed confidence that the Talaimannar Railway project will give pace to the development of the area.
